How to Clear Acne in 3 Steps (Sorry... It's Not Going to Happen Overnight)

Let's get one thing out of the way.

If there were a magic cream that cleared acne in three days, I'd be out of a job.

If there were one pill that worked for everyone, every esthetician and dermatologist would be recommending the exact same thing.

And if that viral TikTok product was the answer... well, none of us would still be dealing with acne.

Acne is stubborn and that is 100% a fact.

It takes time, consistency, and a routine that's built for your skin - not your best friend's, your favourite influencer's, or the girl who swears beef tallow changed her life.

Sorry. I don't make the rules.

The following 3 steps are all you need! They will realistically start to clear up about 90% of people. And if they don’t eradicate your acne completely, then there’s a few additional steps you can implement which will get you there. I will include these at the end. So, let's do this!

Step 1: Cleanse Your Skin

Every good skincare routine starts with cleansing. You gotta clean your face! I don't care if you don't fee like it at night, just do it.

You don't need a cleanser that burns, tingles, or makes your face feel squeaky clean. In fact, that's usually a sign it's too harsh.

A good cleanser removes oil, sunscreen, makeup, sweat, and the day's buildup without stripping your skin barrier. Let me repeat that: you need a gentle, pH balanced, non-drying cleanser. Nourish Cream Cleanser is The Queen here and checks all those boxes.

Think of cleansing as preparing your skin for everything that comes next.

Nothing fancy.

Just consistent.

Morning and night.

Step 2: Add a Targeted Acne Treatment

Here's where the magic actually happens but it's not instant. Cleansing simply isn't enough to clear up acne. You need heavy duty, active (or what I like to call performance ingredients!) You should be looking for something that has comedolytic, keratolytic, anti-inflammatory, or anti-bacterial properties to address all the major causes of acne.

Active ingredients like:

  • Mandelic Acid (literally the holy grail for acne + well tolerated)
  • Salicylic Acid (chemically exfoliates)
  • Benzoyl Peroxide (very potent and comes with strong risk of irritation and allergic reaction)
  • Azelaic Acid (well tolerated and great for those marks left behind after the pimple heals)
  • Retinoids (unclogs pores + great for anti-aging purposes as well)

help reduce congestion, prevent clogged pores, decrease inflammation, and support clearer skin over time.

Notice I said over time.

Not tomorrow.

Not by the weekend.

Acne treatment products work by gradually improving how your skin functions, and that takes patience.

Also - and this is important - not every acne product is right for every person.

Some people have oily skin. Some have dry skin. Some are sensitive (lucky me). Some are dehydrated. Some are blemish-prone. Some are navigating aging skin while still breaking out. And some have skin that seems to tolerate just about anything.

Your routine should reflect your skin, not whatever product is trending this week.

Step 3: Moisturize (Yes... Even If You're Oily)

Can we please retire the myth that oily skin doesn't need moisturizer?

Your skin still needs hydration and barrier support.

In fact, acne treatments can be drying, and skipping moisturizer often leaves your skin irritated, inflamed, and more reactive.

A well-formulated moisturizer helps keep your skin balanced so your treatment products can do their job without causing unnecessary irritation.

Think of it as your skin's support system.

Don't Start Everything at Once

One of the biggest mistakes I see?

Someone buys five new acne products on a Sunday and uses them all that night.

By Tuesday their skin is red, flaky, angry, and they're convinced none of it works.

Instead, build your routine gradually.

Start with:

✔️ A gentle cleanser

✔️ A moisturizer

Use those consistently for a week or two so your skin has a chance to adjust.

Then introduce your acne treatment serum.

This makes it much easier to identify irritation, monitor progress, and keep your skin barrier healthy.

Slow is often faster when it comes to acne.

Keep It Simple

Some people genuinely need a more advanced routine with multiple treatment products.

Others do beautifully with three products.

More skincare doesn't automatically mean better skin.

The goal isn't to own every serum at Sephora.

The goal is to use the right products consistently.

The Bottom Line

If you're trying to clear your acne, don't overcomplicate it.

Start with three essentials:

  1. A gentle cleanser.
  2. A targeted acne treatment.
  3. A moisturizer.

Build your routine slowly.

Stay consistent.

Give your skin time. Once you figure out that your moisturizer doesn't cause breakouts, then add the targeted acne treatment.

Because healthy skin isn't built in a weekend - it’s built through months of small, consistent habits.

Studies show that a moisturizing routine treats acne better and faster than one that is drying. Every cells works better when it's moisturized!

And if you've been trying to figure it out on your own for months (or years), remember this: sometimes the fastest way to clear your skin is to stop guessing.

You don't need a miracle cream.

You need a plan that's built for your skin.

And if you try a three step plan like this for 6 months and see zero improvement then I want you to consider the following additions or pivots to your routine:

  • Avoiding irritation as much as possible, so no picking, using only fingers for makeup application, wearing SPF religiously and avoiding hot showers.
  • Adding in a hydrating toner or serum. If your skin is very dehydrated this is a non-negotiable.
  • Consider supplementing. Acne prone individuals are likely to be deficient in zinc and vitamin D. You can also up your Omega 3's by eating organ meats, eggs, salmon and cod liver oil. Please consult a doctor before supplementing.
  • Changing your pillow case every other night.
  • Treat your skin as kindly as possible. Scars and redness leftover after a breakout can stick around for months or forever so hands off. Your future skin will thank you.
